Day 1Location: The location for Day 1 should be convenient for the Governor and his/her cabinet and staff, but far enough from the Governor’s Office to discourage interruptions.
| 9:00 a.m. | Welcome by the Governor and Introductions |
| 9:30 a.m. | Overview of State’s challenges, goals and strategies
related to growth presented by members of Governor’s cabinet or staff. The purpose of this presentation is to set the context for the expert presentations and discussions that follow. The GICD team prepares for each workshop with considerable research, so this presentation is not expected to be a basic introduction to the issues to be addressed. Rather, it should provide deeper context that will help to ensure that the Governor’s most urgent priorities are addressed in depth throughout the day. |
| 10:00 a.m. | First Expert Presentation – a
brief presentation followed by in-depth group discussion led by member
of GICD expert panel. Please note that the expert panelists and the topics of their presentations are chosen after extensive discussions with each Governors’ cabinet and staff about the Governor’s specific priorities. The panelists and presentations therefore vary from state to state. Examples of topics we have addressed in previous workshops include: “Increasing collaboration among government agencies and state and local coordination”; “Alternatives for Linking Transportation and Land Use through Incentives”; and “Land Preservation Strategies: Deciding what land to protect and designing the best way to protect it.” |
| 11:00 a.m. | Break |
| 11:15 a.m. | Second Expert Presentation – a brief presentation followed by in-depth group discussion led by member of GICD expert panel. |
| 12:15 a.m. | Lunch |
| 1:00 p.m. | Third Expert Presentation – a brief presentation followed by in-depth group discussion led by member of GICD expert panel. |
| 2:00 p.m. | Fourth Expert Presentation – a brief presentation followed by in-depth group discussion led by member of GICD expert panel. |
| 3:00 p.m. | Summary of Discussion and Salient Points – a group discussion led by member of Governor’s cabinet or staff. The purpose of this section is for cabinet and staff to provide the GICD team with reactions to the day’s presentations and follow-up discussions. The GICD team then uses this information in crafting the specific recommendations to be presented to the Governor the following day. |
| 5:00 p.m. | Adjourn |
| 7:00 p.m. | Dinner The dinner provides an opportunity for the GICD team and the state workshop participants to continue the day’s discussion in a more relaxed and informal atmosphere. |
Day 2Location: The Day 2 session does not have to take place in the same location as Day 1. It could take place in the Governor’s Office, for example, or another convenient location.
| 1:00 p.m. | Presentation of recommendations to the Governor, Cabinet, and Staff |
| 4:00 p.m. | Adjourn |
